Braces Liverpool & Carlingford

Advanced metal braces with modern technology

Traditional metal braces remain the most widely used and dependable orthodontic treatment for correcting a broad range of tooth and bite problems.

3D scanning for precise orthodontic care

At our Liverpool and Carlingford clinics, treatment planning now begins with 3D intra-oral scanning instead of traditional impressions.

These scans allow us to create a precise digital model of your teeth and jaws. Using advanced 3D treatment planning software, we can map out the stages of tooth movement and show you what to expect from your orthodontic journey before braces are fitted.

Our specialist orthodontists provide braces for children, teenagers, and adults, combining proven techniques with the latest technology for effective, safe, and predictable outcomes.

Why Choose Metal Braces?

Metal braces may be the right choice if you:

  • Require significant or complex tooth or bite correction
  • Prefer a treatment option that does not rely on patient compliance (unlike clear aligners)
  • Want a cost-effective and proven treatment method
  • Would like a versatile appliance that can treat even severe orthodontic problems

How they work

Braces consist of small brackets bonded to each tooth and connected with a thin archwire. The wire is adjusted at intervals to gradually guide the teeth into alignment.

Many kids and teens enjoy personalising their braces with coloured elastic bands, while adults often choose more neutral tones for a discreet look.

Stages of braces?

Treatment entails a number of stages until your bite is corrected and teeth are aligned. Treatment time will vary depending on your personal situation.

Braces Stage 1 – Level & Alignment

The initial stage focuses on straightening crooked or rotated teeth. Flexible archwires are used to gently move teeth into better positions.

This is when patients notice the most visible changes. Appointments are usually every 6–8 weeks.

Braces Stage 2 – Bite Correction & Space Closure

Once teeth are straighter, sturdier archwires and elastic bands are used to correct the bite and close any gaps.

This stage can take longer and requires good compliance with elastic wear.

Appointments are generally every 6–8 weeks.

Braces Stage 3 – Detailing & Finishing

In the final stage, small adjustments fine-tune the bite and smile.

Subtle bends in the wires may be added to perfect alignment. This stage prepares your teeth for brace removal.

Retention & Retainers

Finishing treatment is just the beginning, keeping your teeth in place is critical. Teeth naturally tend to shift as we age, so retainer wear is essential to prevent relapse.

  • Full-time wear is recommended for the first few months (except while brushing, eating, or playing vigorous sport).
  • After this, retainers are typically worn at night, indefinitely.
  • Your orthodontist will advise the best retainer type and routine for you.

Frequently asked questions

Braces are fitted in one appointment. The teeth are cleaned and dried, small brackets are bonded with dental adhesive, and a thin archwire is secured with elastic bands. No drilling or numbing is required.

Treatment times vary depending on complexity. Most patients wear braces for 12–24 months, though very mild or complex cases may be shorter or longer. Your orthodontist will provide a tailored estimate at your consultation.

You may feel mild pressure or tightness for a few days after your braces are fitted or adjusted. This is normal and temporary. Over-the-counter pain relief or softer foods can help in the adjustment period.

Yes! Teens and kids can choose from a wide range of colours for elastic ties at each visit, while adults often prefer clear or neutral shades.

Most braces are made from high-grade stainless steel, sometimes with nickel or titanium. These materials are safe, durable, and biocompatible. If you have a known metal allergy, let your orthodontist know so we can plan accordingly.

Braces themselves do not damage teeth, but poor cleaning around them can lead to plaque build-up, decay, or gum problems. Careful brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups are essential during treatment.

Yes. Regular dental check-ups and professional cleans remain important throughout orthodontic treatment. Your orthodontist and dentist will work together to maintain your oral health.

Avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods that can break brackets or wires, such as:

  • Popcorn
  • Hard nuts
  • Sticky lollies
  • Ice cubes
  • Chewing gum
  • Hard taco shells

Cut up crunchy foods (like apples or carrots) into smaller pieces and chew carefully.

Absolutely. If you play contact sports, wear a custom mouthguard to protect your braces and teeth. For wind instruments, there may be a short adjustment period, but most patients adapt quickly.

Braces are made of non-magnetic materials, so they usually don’t interfere with MRIs. Rarely, images of the head or neck may be slightly distorted. Always inform your radiologist. Braces do not set off airport security scanners.

Yes, but only temporarily. Teeth loosen slightly as they are moved into new positions. Once they settle and retainers are worn, they stabilise in their new alignment.

Your orthodontist will carefully remove the brackets and polish away any adhesive. Retainers will be fitted shortly afterwards to maintain your result.

Yes. Options include ceramic braces (tooth-coloured and less visible) and clear aligners (such as Invisalign®). Your orthodontist will discuss which treatment is most suitable for your needs.
