Specialist Orthodontic Solutions

Common orthodontic problems we treat

From crowding and spacing to bite issues and jaw discrepancies, our specialist orthodontists create personalised treatment plans to correct problems, improve function, and support long-term oral health.

Treatments, mapped out in 3D

Using 3D intra-oral scanning and digital treatment planning, we can map out tooth and jaw movements in advance, improving accuracy and allowing you to visualise your treatment journey before it begins.

Crowding

Crowding occurs when there isn’t enough space in the jaw for all teeth to align properly. This can cause teeth to overlap, rotate, or become blocked.

Correcting crowding:

  • Improves appearance and smile balance
  • Makes teeth easier to clean, lowering the risk of decay or gum disease
  • Supports better bite function and long-term stability

Excessive spacing

Spacing issues appear when gaps form between teeth, often due to smaller-than-average teeth, missing teeth, or jaw size discrepancies.

Closing spaces can:

  • Improve bite efficiency and function
  • Create a more balanced smile
  • Prepare the mouth for restorative treatments such as implants or bridgework if teeth are missing

Openbite

An open bite means the upper and lower teeth do not touch when the mouth is closed, leaving a gap. It can be caused by habits (like thumb sucking), tongue posture, or jaw growth patterns.

Open bites can:

  • Make biting into foods like apples or sandwiches difficult
  • Affect speech and articulation
  • Contribute to uneven wear on the back teeth

Treatment aims to bring the front and back teeth into contact for proper function and aesthetics.

Overbite

An overbite (sometimes called a “deep bite”) occurs when the upper front teeth overlap too far over the lower teeth.

Potential problems include:

  • Excessive wear or damage to lower teeth
  • Jaw discomfort or strain
  • A “collapsed” smile appearance if severe

Treatment rebalances the bite, protecting teeth and improving comfort.

Underbite

An underbite occurs when the lower teeth sit in front of the upper teeth when the mouth is closed. This can cause difficulties with chewing, speaking, and can place extra stress on the jaw. Orthodontic treatment helps shift the bite into a healthier, more comfortable position.

Cross bite

A crossbite occurs when one or more upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth when biting. It may affect just a single tooth or an entire side of the mouth.

If untreated, crossbites can:

  • Lead to uneven tooth wear
  • Cause gum recession around affected teeth
  • Contribute to jaw shifting and long-term joint problems

Orthodontic correction aligns the bite, balancing both function and aesthetics.

Jaw alignment problems & orthognathic surgery

Sometimes bite issues are caused not only by teeth but by the size or position of the jaws. In these cases, orthodontics alone may not be enough.

  • Mild to moderate jaw discrepancies can often be corrected with orthodontic appliances while a child or teen is still growing.
  • Severe jaw discrepancies in adults may require a combined approach of orthodontic treatment and orthognathic surgery (jaw surgery).

We use 3D digital scans and planning software to carefully design these treatments.

This allows us to coordinate with oral and maxillofacial surgeons, simulate surgical outcomes, and give patients a clear understanding of their treatment pathway.

Orthognathic surgery may be recommended to:

  • Correct severe underbites, overbites, or open bites
  • Improve facial balance and symmetry
  • Address jaw-related breathing or airway concerns
  • Support chewing, speech, and long-term oral health
